A Tulsa Life Coach Perspective …

    Tulsa Life Coach

    What will you do today?

You are a leader, leaders take risks and leaders enroll their team in a vision of success!

Yesterday morning a few of us (Tulsa Outdoor Adventure Meetup) went on a hike at Turkey Mountain Recreational Area in Tulsa Oklahoma.  Our treks will normally last 2 1/2 hours and cover 5 miles across wooded trails.  There are many miles of trails.  There was a small partially over grown trail we had never been down before, it was worth a look.  The trail ended at a small stream.  We could turn around… I asked the group if they wanted to take the safe road or go for the adventure?  Thankfully no one was interested in the safe road.  For the next quarter mile we carefully navigated river banks of poison ivy, sloshed knee deep in mud, walked down the middle of the stream testing the path with a pole for hazards, and refining our ability to balance on slippery rocks .  We finished this leg of the hike by stepping from beam to beam as we traversed a railroad bridge watching the stream under our feet from 20 feet above.

This was outside the box.  There was risk.  We took the “road less traveled”.  We felt rewarded.

What action will you take today to step out side your box?  Who is on your team?  Do you have a shared Vision?

“I took the road less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.”

A Tulsa Life Coach Perspective …

Are you a manager trapped in a career where you feel like your talents are being wasted?

    Tulsa Life Coach

    What are you capable of?

You could change jobs; would this really change anything?  Wherever you go, there you still are.  If you keep performing in your “weak spot” you might as well be Superman sitting on a street corner with a hunk of kryptonite around your neck watching the hours tic by.

What are your strengths? What are you good at?  Your manager wants to know.

Employers will use personality profile tests to screen potential candidates, or as a tool to “coach” you to improved levels of performance.  There are many different personality profile file tests to choose from, like Winslow, DISC, and CVI to name a few.  These tests are a series of questions designed to quantify and label your strengths and weaknesses.

How each us us responds to questions describes the current limits of our own personal box, your average performance.  This “box” is an indication of what we are willing or unwilling to do either consciously and unconsciously at any given moment.  When you coach someone, you start by asking questions, you explore perceived limits, you make it safe to lower barriers.

As a Manager coaching an employee to succeed it is important to understand that an employees perceived limits are not what you know about someone.  When you “know” an employee, you impose your own barriers to success.  Start a conversation by believing a life outside the box is possible, doing this you will create a safe space for an employee to exceed their box.  When you create a safe space you will be stepping outside your own box and living into your role as an effective manager.

It is your job as a manager to look objectively at the data (from personality tests, observation, etc), and encourage people to perform beyond the boxes we all find ourselves in.  You succeed at this by pushing the limits of your own box, living by example.

Superhuman means performing your best, no matter what the circumstances.  In means living outside the box in any role you happen to find yourself in.

It’s not the career you are trapped in … you are trapped in a box of perceptions.

What ever activity you will be doing today, washing dishes, designing a nuclear reactor, mowing a lawn, piloting an F22, managing a department, brushing your teeth …  are you doing your best?
